Revealed: Big B’s role in Aankhen 2

By Manishaa R

Amitabh Bachchan’s character in Aankhen 2 will be something to watch out for. Sixteen years ago Bachchan reprised the role of a baddie, who plans a bank heist with the help of three blind men in Vipul Shah’s thriller Aankhen. This time the celebrated actor will once again play a baddie but with a new twist to the tale, “He will be brimming with new ideas after he returns from jail but this time on he will be a witty man, with a comic streak and a typical sense of black humour. The new traits in his character will be the result of what has transpired in his life in the intervening period. The concept is not new but the situations and circumstances will be entirely different. Amit-ji’s character will be definitely one to watch out for,” says writer-director Anees Bazmee, who is best known for his slapstick comedy in films like No Entry, Welcome, Singh is Kinng  and the more recent, Welcome Back.

According to him, Big B was excited when he narrated the story and the twist to his character in the sequel, “He has experimented with almost every role in his illustrious career but he was quite impressed with the script. We were quite enthused by his response.”

Ask Bazmee on whether he is comfortable exploring the thriller genre after having explored comedy at its very best in a majority of his films and he reminds you of his 2002 psychological thriller Deewangi starring Ajay Devgn, “Ajay’s character was that of a budding music director. In the film he was shown being caught red-handed at the site of the murder but it was also evident from his split personality that he was not the real murderer. I kept the audiences guessing till the very end,” he says.

According to Bazmee, it will be the nail-biting suspense and the pacy screenplay in Aankhen 2 that will keep the audiences glues to their seats, “The narrative will be even more gripping and the movie will be bigger and better than the original version. There will be more action and drama too but I can say for sure that the audiences will be clueless about the next move of the protagonists.”  It may be recalled that the original Aankhen starred Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and Arjun Rampal along with Amitabh Bachchan. While Bachchan will take the story forward, the rest of the cast will be announced today at the official launch of the movie.

Bazmee who has to his credit, more than 40 films as a writer and 11 films as a director feels that the key to a film’s success is how much a director succeeds in entertaining the audiences, “You can stir their feelings, make them cry or even create a fear psychosis but it is important to give them value for money. I can confidently say that Aankhen 2 will be one of the best told suspense stories in recent times.”
